Furnace replacement in Buffalo makes sense when repairs pile up, the heat exchanger fails, or the furnace costs more to run than a new one would. We tell you which situation you are in and quote the work before it starts.
Some customers come to us after another contractor pushed a new furnace on the first visit. Others come after a breakdown with no time to shop. Either way, we look at the furnace you have, explain what it needs, and let you decide.
What is included with furnace replacement
- A diagnosis first, so replacement is a decision and not an assumption
- A heat exchanger check with a clear explanation of what we find
- Manual J sizing for the replacement, since the old furnace may be the wrong size
- Removal and disposal of the old furnace and its connections
- Review of venting, chimney condition and any water heater sharing the flue
- Start-up testing, safety checks and a walk-through of the new controls
- A clear quote before work starts
How do I know it is time to replace my furnace?
- A cracked heat exchanger: a safety failure, and the usual end of the furnace.
- Repairs that keep recurring: a different part fails every winter and the invoices add up.
- Rooms that never get comfortable: the furnace is the wrong size, or the blower and ducts no longer move air well.
- Soot, rust or flame trouble: signs of poor combustion or venting that deserve a close look.
- Noise and delay: loud starts, long waits for heat and short cycling.
- Rising fuel use: an older, lower-efficiency furnace burning more gas to deliver the same heat.
No single sign decides it. A single failed ignitor on a furnace that otherwise runs well is a repair. A cracked heat exchanger on any furnace is a replacement. Most cases fall in between, which is why we look before recommending.

Repair or replace: how do we decide?
| What we find | Our usual advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small failed part, otherwise sound | Repair | The rest of the furnace is still doing its job |
| Second or third major repair in a short span | Discuss replacement | The next failure is likely, and it will be on a cold night |
| Cracked heat exchanger | Replace | Combustion gases can reach the living space |
| Wrong size for the house | Replace, sized properly | Repair cannot fix a sizing problem |
A cracked heat exchanger is the point where we stop talking about repair. We show you the crack, or the test result that shows it, and explain why the furnace should stay off. Replacing a heat exchanger on an older furnace is rarely a good use of money, and we will say so.
“Honest guy, told me what the issues were, replaced my thermostat when the other guy wanted to replace my furnace.”
What happens when the furnace dies in the middle of winter?
You still decide, but time pressure is real. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Call, even outside those hours, and leave a message. We tell you honestly when we can get there, and if we cannot get there in time we say so.
Sometimes we can get the old furnace limping again while the new one is ordered and scheduled. A customer described exactly that sequence, with a temporary fix and a new furnace installed afterward. That is not always possible, and a cracked heat exchanger is never a candidate for a temporary run.
“He was at my house within hours. … He was very honest, knowledgeable and not pushy at all.”
What does replacing a furnace in an older Buffalo home involve?
More than swapping boxes. Census data via Point2Homes shows about 61 percent of City of Buffalo housing units were built in 1939 or earlier, and those houses bring chimney, duct and gas line questions. A new furnace that vents through the sidewall leaves the old chimney with only a water heater on it. That flue may then be oversized and cool, which can cause poor draft. The solution is a liner or a power-vented water heater, and we plan for it up front.
Ducts deserve attention too. Many old systems were sized for a leaky house with a smaller supply and a weak return. A new, well-matched furnace works against those limits. We check static pressure and flag duct changes in the quote so they are not a surprise on installation day.
How a replacement runs from first visit to final test
- Diagnose first. We test the furnace and look at the heat exchanger, so replacement follows a finding and not a hunch.
- Measure the house. A fresh Manual J load replaces the nameplate size of the old unit, and we check duct static pressure alongside it.
- Settle venting and the flue. We decide where the new vent runs and what becomes of the old chimney and any water heater on it.
- Approve one quote. Equipment, extras and any duct or flue work come in a single clear quote, and the decision stays with you.
- Swap and connect. The old furnace is disconnected and hauled out, the new one is set, and gas, vent, drain, duct and wiring are connected.
- Test and hand over. We check ignition, gas pressure, temperature rise and safety switches, then show you the controls and the filter routine.

Is a high-efficiency furnace worth it in Buffalo?
In many houses it is. NOAA’s normals show about 6,466 heating degree days a year, so a furnace here has more hours to turn a higher efficiency rating into fuel savings. One Victorian-home customer upgraded an older furnace to a high-efficiency model and added central air in the same project.
Condensing furnaces need a plastic vent and a condensate drain, and both must stay clear in freezing weather. If your chimney is sound and your budget is tight, a standard-efficiency furnace remains a reasonable pick. We describe both and let you choose. If you are also wondering about electric heat, read our page on heat pump installation.

What does furnace replacement cost, and are rebates available?
The price depends on the furnace tier, the venting route, duct changes and what the old system needs to be removed safely. We give you a clear quote for your house rather than a range that may not fit. Our guide to furnace replacement cost in Buffalo lists the factors.
For outside references only, HomeAdvisor’s 2025 data puts a typical national furnace replacement at about $2,824 to $6,883, around $4,803 on average, and Angi’s 2026 average is about $4,814. Project Cost Atlas, updated December 28, 2025, lists $8,125 to $18,125 per system for a full HVAC replacement, which includes cooling. These are aggregator figures that disagree with each other and are not our quote.
Incentives have shifted. The federal Section 25C credit expired on December 31, 2025 under P.L. 119-21, and National Fuel states that direct incentives for gas-fired appliances ended on January 1, 2026. National Fuel still runs weatherization and thermostat incentives, so check the current program page before assuming anything. Income-based help may be available through NYSERDA’s HEAR program, which is also worth checking.
Permits, licensing and code for a replacement
In the City of Buffalo, heating work goes through the Fuel Devices office at Permit & Inspection Services, (716) 851-4959, and the city requires a Heating Contractor license for it. Work begun before the permit is issued can be charged double fees under Buffalo Code Chapter 175. Beyond the city, New York sets no statewide HVAC license, so Erie County Consumer Protection points you to each municipality. The Town of Cheektowaga covers HVAC contractors and the Village of Kenmore requires contractor licensing, for example.
When two quotes arrive, check which one names who pulls the permit and whether the inspection is in the price. The state energy code also expects furnace sizing to follow Manual S, based on a Manual J load. Confirm the rule for your address with your municipality.

Furnace Replacement questions
How much does it cost to replace a furnace in Buffalo?
The honest answer depends on the equipment tier, venting route, duct changes and the condition of what is being removed. We do not publish a price list and will not quote you a figure that ignores your house. You get a clear quote before any work starts, with the options laid out so you can compare them side by side.
Can I replace just the furnace and keep my old AC?
Often you can, as long as the existing coil and line set are compatible and the air conditioner is in good shape. A mismatched coil can hurt efficiency, and an aging AC may deserve a conversation of its own. We check the match during the visit and tell you what we recommend before you spend money.
How long does a furnace last before replacement is needed?
There is no single number, because condition, use and maintenance matter more than age alone. A furnace that has been serviced and runs well can outlast one that has been neglected. We judge by the heat exchanger, the repair history and how the furnace performs in your home, and then give you a straight answer.
What does the efficiency rating on a new furnace mean?
The rating is AFUE, the share of the fuel a furnace turns into heat for the house instead of sending it up the vent. A 95 percent unit delivers about 95 cents of each fuel dollar as heat. Higher ratings usually mean a condensing furnace with plastic venting, so the rating also affects where the pipes exit your wall.
What is a cracked heat exchanger and is it dangerous?
The heat exchanger is the metal barrier between the flame and the air you breathe. A crack can let combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, reach the house. We show you what we find. Keep working carbon monoxide alarms on every level, and if one sounds, go outside and call 911 before you call us.
Will a new furnace work with my existing ducts and thermostat?
Usually, after a check. We test the ducts for leaks and restrictions and make sure the thermostat has the wiring a new furnace needs. If a smart thermostat lacks a common wire, running one is routine work. We include anything that has to change in the quote so nothing is added later.
Where we handle furnace replacement
- HamburgFurnaces that survived years of heavy lake-effect seasons are the likely replacement candidates here.
- KenmoreHouses mostly built through 1925 often need a unit that fits between joists in tight basements.
- LackawannaSteel-era worker housing near the lake may pair an aging furnace with an old chimney.
- West SenecaRusted cabinets and flues in damp creek-side basements often tip the answer toward replacement.
- CheektowagaPostwar capes and ranches are on a second or third furnace, so size from today’s house.
- Orchard ParkNewer larger homes may justify a two-stage furnace sized for how each floor behaves.
- LancasterFurnaces from Lancaster’s growth years are now old enough to weigh against replacement.
- East AuroraOlder village houses raise chimney and flue questions, and some also still heat with boilers.
- DepewMid-century furnaces sized by habit get a fresh load check before the swap.
- BlasdellTight village basements mean we measure access and the vent route before quoting a swap.
