Heating and cooling in Kenmore means working inside houses that were built before 1925, where boilers, radiators and tight basements are normal and ducts are not. We are about 30 minutes away in Orchard Park and take the layout of the house as seriously as the age of the equipment.

Kenmore is a village of 15,205 people at the 2020 Census, per Wikipedia, packed into 1.44 square miles. Space is the constraint in almost every job: where the new equipment goes, where the pipe runs, and whether the house has ducts at all.

Early 1900s houses, radiators and tight basements

The American Planning Association named Kenmore one of its Great Neighborhoods in 2009. Its profile says the first house dates to 1889 and that most homes were built through 1925, in Victorian, Craftsman, Colonial Revival and American Foursquare styles. The Town of Tonawanda’s 2005 plan, using 2000 Census data, puts 53.4 percent of village homes at before 1939. Kenmore was Buffalo’s streetcar suburb, and the housing still reads that way.

Foursquares and Colonial Revivals were built before central air existed.

Houses like these were built to be heated with radiators, and many still are. A boiler repair or a boiler replacement here often comes down to access: a narrow stairwell, a low basement ceiling, an old chimney that no longer suits a modern appliance. Others were converted to ducted heat decades ago, with trunks squeezed between the joists.

The APA profile also says more than half of the village’s 7,500 units are single-family, 30 percent are two-family and 12.5 percent sit in larger buildings. A two-family house has two heating systems or one shared system, and both change how we plan. Cooling is the other gap. With few central air systems in these houses and no ducts to carry it, a ductless mini split is often the cleanest answer.

The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (2020-2024 estimates) puts the median year built at 1941, with about 49 percent of homes from 1939 or earlier and another 15 percent from the 1940s. About 91 percent heat with utility gas, so the boiler or furnace is rarely the question. Where it fits, and how the flue vents, usually is.

Services Kenmore homes ask for most

Planning a Kenmore visit from Orchard Park

Kenmore is outside the communities on our Google profile, so call before assuming a day. Tell us whether the house has radiators or ducts, how old the equipment is and whether it is a single or two-family. We answer honestly about timing, and the drive is about 30 minutes. We take calls Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

On site we measure the space, test the system and explain the options. You get a quote you can read before we start anything. When a basement is too tight for the obvious answer, we say so and work out another one.

Village licensing and what we can point to in Kenmore

Erie County Consumer Protection says the Village of Kenmore requires contractor licensing, effective January 1, 2020. Ask any contractor for the village’s requirement and confirm it with village hall before work begins.

The village’s own website adds that when work needs a building permit, the contractor must hold a Village of Kenmore license. The license lasts one calendar year, and the application asks for proof of insurance and an escrow account. Call the village Building Department before work starts to learn which permits apply to your job.

Wikipedia places Delaware Avenue (NY 384) north to south through the village, Military Road (NY 265) along its west line and Kenmore Avenue along its south line. The Eberhardt Mansion stands at the corner of Delaware and Kenmore Avenues.

We have no project photos tagged to Kenmore streets on this site, and we will not make any up. What we can offer is a 4.9 rating on Google from 57 reviews as of October 2026. Read them and judge for yourself. Delaware Avenue, the village’s mile-long main street, Mang Park and the Eberhardt Mansion all sit in the area we are describing.

Kenmore heating and cooling questions

Can a Kenmore house with radiators get central air?

Yes, but not always through ducts. Radiator houses usually have no duct system, and adding one means opening walls and ceilings. A ductless mini split avoids that and cools the rooms you use most. We look at the layout, the electrical panel and the budget, then tell you honestly which approach makes sense.

Does the Village of Kenmore require contractor licensing?

Yes. Erie County Consumer Protection says the Village of Kenmore requires contractor licensing, effective January 1, 2020. New York has no statewide HVAC license, so the rule is local. Ask any contractor for the license that applies to your address, and confirm with village hall if you want to check that it is current.

How long does an old boiler last in a Kenmore house?

It varies with the water, the maintenance and the unit, so age alone does not decide it. Cast-iron boilers in houses from the early 1900s can outlast several burners, while a leaking or cracked boiler cannot be repaired economically. We test it, show you the readings, and explain whether repair or replacement is the better choice before you approve anything.

What is different about heating a two-family house in Kenmore?

Each unit may have its own system, or both may share one boiler, and that changes the work. A shared system means one failure affects both households. Separate systems mean two sets of equipment to maintain. Tell us the layout when you call, and who needs access, and we will plan the visit around the tenant schedule.
