Furnace installation in Buffalo works best when the furnace is chosen from a heat loss calculation, not from the size of the old one. We size the equipment, plan the venting and gas piping, and quote the whole job before work begins.
A furnace here works for most of the year. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put Buffalo at about 6,466 heating degree days, so a mistake in sizing, venting or ductwork shows up every winter, not just once.
What is included with furnace installation
- A Manual J heat loss calculation for the house, not a rule of thumb
- Equipment selection under Manual S, with options explained in plain terms
- Venting, intake and combustion air plan, including snow clearance on the outside wall
- Gas line, electrical and condensate drain work as the installation requires
- A check of the existing ductwork, supply and return, before the new furnace goes on it
- Start-up testing, a combustion check and a walk-through of the controls
- A clear quote before work starts
What kinds of furnace can we install?
Most homes in our area use natural gas, and the real choices are about efficiency and staging rather than brand. Electric furnaces suit houses with no gas service or a small load, though running costs differ.
| Type | How it works | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-efficiency gas | Vents hot exhaust up a metal flue or chimney | The chimney is sound and the budget is tight |
| Condensing gas | Pulls extra heat from exhaust and vents through plastic pipe | You want lower fuel use and a sidewall vent is practical |
| Two-stage or modulating gas | Runs at lower output most of the time | Comfort and quiet matter, or rooms feel uneven |
| Electric | Resistance elements heat the air | No gas service is available, or heat demand is small |
When is it an installation and not a replacement?
Installation covers the jobs that are not a like-for-like swap: a house heated by electric baseboard or an old oil boiler that wants ducted gas heat, an addition or finished attic with no heat of its own, one large house split into two zones, or a change of fuel. Each starts with a new load calculation and a look at where gas, vent and ducts can physically go.
The same survey shows when the furnace is not the problem. Rooms that never heat evenly are often a return-air or duct issue, and a bigger furnace will not cure them. If you only need to replace a failed unit, read about furnace replacement instead.

How do you size a furnace for a Buffalo house?
We measure the house instead of guessing. The New York State energy code calls for equipment to be selected under ACCA Manual S, based on loads from ACCA Manual J or another approved method. Manual J accounts for insulation, windows, air leakage, orientation and the local design temperature.
Oversizing is the common mistake. A furnace that is too big heats quickly, shuts off, and repeats the cycle, which wears parts and leaves cold corners. Older houses add a wrinkle. Census data via Point2Homes shows about 61 percent of City of Buffalo housing units date from 1939 or earlier, and a building with added insulation and new windows loses far less heat than it did in 1930. The old furnace can be double what the house needs today.
“John and the crew were awesome, good guys. I couldn’t be happier with my completely new HVAC system.”
How does a furnace installation work, step by step?
- Walk the house. We look at the existing furnace, ducts, chimney or vent path, gas line and electrical, and ask how each room feels in January.
- Calculate and choose. The Manual J result sets the size range. We then explain the efficiency and staging options that fit it.
- Quote the whole job. The quote covers equipment, venting, gas and electrical work, permits where required and any duct changes.
- Install and connect. The old unit comes out, the new one is set level, and the duct, vent, gas and drain connections are made.
- Commission. We verify gas pressure, ignition, temperature rise, airflow and safety switches before we call it done.
- Walk you through it. You get the controls, the filter routine and the manufacturer’s paperwork explained.
“John and his team at Vantage did a really great job of installing two new furnaces in our home (for separate floors).”
Where will the new furnace vent in lake-effect snow?
Venting deserves as much thought as sizing here. A condensing furnace draws combustion air and exhausts through plastic pipes that exit the wall, and a drift can bury them. Pipe terminations belong above the likely snow line and away from where snow slides off a roof. National Fuel advises customers to clear snow and ice from appliance vents, so an easy-to-reach location helps.
In older homes, the furnace often shares a masonry chimney with a water heater. A modern furnace may not use that chimney at all, which can leave the water heater with a flue that is too large for it. The fix can be a chimney liner or a power-vented water heater, and we raise it in the quote rather than after the furnace is in.

What affects the cost of a new furnace installation, and which permits apply?
We do not publish a price list, and we will not quote a number that ignores your house. These are the factors that move the total.
- Equipment tier: single-stage, two-stage or modulating, and the efficiency rating.
- Venting: a sidewall run through finished space costs more than a short direct vent.
- Ductwork: undersized returns, collapsed flex or missing supply runs have to be fixed or the furnace will not perform.
- Gas and electrical: a longer or smaller gas line, or a new circuit, adds labor.
- Permits: Buffalo heating work goes through the Fuel Devices office at Permit & Inspection Services, and work started before a permit can be charged double fees under Buffalo Code Chapter 175.
For an outside reference, Angi’s 2026 figures put a natural gas furnace installation at about $3,800 to $10,000 nationally, with ductwork adding about $2,000 to $7,500 on average. That is an aggregator’s national range and not our quote. Venting through finished space or an old chimney can move a Buffalo job outside it.
New York has no statewide HVAC contractor license, and licensing is set by each municipality, according to Erie County Consumer Protection. Confirm the rules with your town or village before any contractor starts. Our guide to what changes the price of a furnace goes deeper.
Permits, licensing and code for a furnace install
The City of Buffalo requires a Heating Contractor license for heating work, and the Fuel Devices office at Permit & Inspection Services, (716) 851-4959, can confirm who holds one. Elsewhere in Erie County the county list shows who licenses what. The Town of Cheektowaga licenses HVAC contractors, the Town of Amherst licenses home improvement contractors, and the Village of Kenmore and the Town and City of Tonawanda require contractor licensing. Orchard Park licenses plumbers and electricians.
The state energy code adds a design rule, calling for equipment selected under ACCA Manual S from loads figured by Manual J or another approved method. Ask whoever quotes your job who pulls the permit, and confirm the local requirement with your municipality.

How do I look after a new furnace?
Change the filter on the schedule in your manual, keep the vent pipes clear after storms, and test your carbon monoxide alarms. Register the equipment so the manufacturer’s coverage is on record. A new furnace still benefits from a yearly check, and our furnace maintenance page explains what that visit covers.
“John took a lot of time with me, and never once did I feel rushed.”

Why Vantage for furnace installation
Designed from the load
We size from a Manual J calculation, so the furnace matches the house and not the furnace it replaces. The load result sets the equipment size before price comes into the conversation.
Neat, tidy crews
Customers comment that installers were courteous, cleaned up after themselves and showed up when scheduled.
Straight talk on options
One customer was told why a zoning idea would cost too much and might not work. We would rather explain than upsell, and a clear quote arrives before any work starts.

Furnace Installation questions
How long does a furnace installation take?
A straightforward swap is commonly finished in a day, while a first-time installation with new venting, gas line or duct changes takes longer. One customer’s full system with a hot water tank took about two days. We give you a realistic schedule in the quote and work around your calendar where we can.
Do I need a permit to install a furnace?
In the City of Buffalo, heating work goes through Permit & Inspection Services, and work started before a permit is issued can be charged double fees under Chapter 175. Other Erie County towns have their own rules, so confirm with yours. We tell you what applies to your address when we quote the job.
Should I choose a high-efficiency condensing furnace?
Often yes in this climate, because the furnace runs most of the year and fuel savings add up. It needs a plastic vent through an outside wall and a condensate drain, and both must survive snow and freezing. If your chimney is sound and the budget is tight, a standard-efficiency furnace can still be a sensible choice.
Can you install two furnaces for separate floors?
Yes. One customer had two new furnaces installed for separate floors of a home. Splitting a larger or multi-level house into zones can improve comfort, but it needs two load calculations, separate venting and a place for both units. We assess whether it fits before recommending it.
Will you reuse my old ductwork?
Sometimes, after we inspect it. A new furnace pushes air through the same ducts, so leaks, tight returns and collapsed runs hurt performance. If the ducts are sound, we connect to them. If not, we explain the repairs needed and what they would change in comfort before you decide.
Where we handle furnace installation
- Orchard ParkLarger two-story homes here often need airflow checked before a bigger furnace is chosen.
- LancasterGrowth-era subdivisions have first-generation furnaces now old enough for a fresh load calculation.
- AmherstLarge houses and additions may need zoned heat, each zone with its own load figure.
- CheektowagaSecond and third furnaces in postwar houses should be sized to the insulated house today.
- HamburgSide-wall vents belong above the drifts that heavy Hamburg lake-effect snow builds along walls.
- West SenecaCreek-side basements can run damp, so we plan where the unit and condensate drain sit.
- ClarenceLarge custom homes and additions may need two furnaces, each sized from its own load.
- WilliamsvilleHistoric village houses with limited duct space need the furnace route planned before a quote.
- DepewMid-century houses sized by habit get a fresh load check, and the ducts get a look.
- ElmaPropane or natural gas, the fuel supply decides which furnace fits a country property.
