Heating and cooling in Chautauqua County means seasonal cottages, lakeshore houses and rural homes, all at the far southwest edge of where we work. The drive from Orchard Park runs from about 45 minutes to Dunkirk to about 75 to Jamestown.
Because of the distance, please call before you plan around us. You will get a plain answer on timing, the lead time we would need, and whether someone closer makes more sense.
Lake Erie shoreline, Chautauqua Lake and rural homes
Wikipedia calls Chautauqua the westernmost county in New York, with Lake Erie along its northern border and Chautauqua Lake near the center. The county had 127,657 residents at the 2020 Census. Mayville is the county seat and Jamestown the largest city, while Dunkirk and Fredonia sit on the Lake Erie shore.
Many homes here are used differently from a typical Buffalo house. A cottage that sits empty for part of the year needs a different heating plan than a house lived in every day, and a rural home may rely on propane or oil instead of gas. Tell us how you use the house and what it burns, and we can say whether a visit helps.
Seasonal use shows in the numbers. In the American Community Survey (2020-2024 estimates), about 6,800 housing units in the county, roughly 10 percent, are held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use, against about 0.6 percent in Erie County. In the Town of Chautauqua, on Chautauqua Lake, the figure is about 55 percent of 4,115 units. North Harmony is near 39 percent and Ellery near 29 percent.
Terrain adds to the difference. Wikipedia gives the lowest point in the county as Lake Erie at 571 feet and the highest as Gurnsey Benchmark at 2,180 feet, with most land between about 1,100 and 2,100 feet. In its summary of the December 2013 lake-effect event, the National Weather Service in Buffalo lists 15 inches at Dunkirk and notes that a few areas along the Chautauqua ridge had received 1 to 1.5 feet.
Fuel and age vary as well. The same survey shows about 67 percent of county homes heating with utility gas, 16 percent with electricity, 10 percent with propane or other bottled gas, 4 percent with wood and 2.5 percent with oil. Jamestown’s housing is old: the median year built is 1938, about 58 percent dates from 1939 or earlier, and about 26 percent of its units are two-family buildings.

Services Chautauqua County homes ask for most

Municipal power in Jamestown, Westfield and Mayville
The New York Department of Public Service lists National Grid and NYSEG as electric utilities for Chautauqua County, plus municipal electric systems for Brocton, Westfield, Mayville and Jamestown. Gas comes from National Fuel Gas Distribution or Chautauqua Utilities, Inc. Electric heat is common in the city: the survey puts electricity at about 25 percent of Jamestown homes, against about 9 percent across Erie County.
If you own a cottage that sits empty for months, you have two plans, and each has a risk:
- Keep it heated. Set the thermostat low. A furnace failure or power cut can freeze pipes before anyone notices, and a wifi thermostat that reports the temperature can warn you if the cottage has internet.
- Drain it. Draining the water system avoids freezing, but a boiler or hydronic loop needs its own shutdown plan, so ask before you close the house.
- Either way. Book the furnace or boiler check before the first cold week, so the equipment is not what fails while nobody is home.

Chautauqua County heating and cooling questions
Do you service Chautauqua County cottages?
We can talk about it, but this is the far edge of our range. Dunkirk is about 45 minutes from Orchard Park and Jamestown about 75. Call first, tell us how the cottage is used and what it burns, and we will say honestly whether a visit makes sense for you.
Which Chautauqua County town is closest to you?
Dunkirk is the closest, at about 45 minutes from our Orchard Park base, followed by Fredonia at about 50 and Jamestown at about 75. All three take planning, so we schedule these visits ahead and ask you to phone us during the week before assuming anyone can arrive on a particular day.
Who licenses HVAC contractors in Chautauqua County?
We have not verified local rules there, so check with your town, village or city. New York has no statewide HVAC contractor license, and licensing is local. The Erie County consumer office covers its own municipalities and no others. Ask any contractor which license applies at your address, then confirm it with the municipality.
